Challenge Guidelines...
Threads of Tradition at Historic
Sauder Village sponsors the...
Village Quilt Challenge 2008
Theme... "Do a Double Take"...
Each entrant will attempt to create the
illusion of two totally different blocks from the same block
pattern by manipulating the elements of design... line, rhythm,
symmetry and color. Combining simple patchwork blocks with
complex printed fabric is the perfect medium for exploring how
fabric prints can be used to vary the same patchwork
configuration. Each entry may include as many patchwork block
patterns as the quilter desires, but each block pattern used in
this challenge must be included in the quilt at least two or
more times, with each block sewn with different fabric
placement. All 2008
Challenge quilts are subject to the same entry guidelines as all
other categories in the quilt show.

Techniques...
Each entry must be pieced and
quilted either by hand and/or machine. Appliqué
or other embellishment of the artist's choice may be added to
the basic construction.
Fabrics...
For the 2008 Challenge, we
have selected three color-ways (Blue/Green, Olive/Purple and
Fuchsia/Orange) of Opulence fabrics designed by Paula
Nadelstern and printed by Benartex. Each challenge kit will
contain one fat quarter each of a Wacky Stripe, Classic Stripe,
Marble Diva, Shimmer and two colors of Prismaglass, one fat
third yard of Mega Marble fabric, plus one half yard of
coordinating Madame Butterfly fabric. Each entrant may choose
one or more color-ways to include in their challenge quilt. To
qualify for the Challenge, each entry must include an easily
recognizable piece of at least six different fabrics from the
fabric packet. In addition to the designated challenge fabrics,
the quilt artist may, but is not required to, add one background
fabric of their choice.
We would love to have you visit us
to personally pick up your fabric packet, but if that is not
possible, we will send you a Challenge Packet for $31.98
including shipping and handling. Additional yardage will also be
available either by shopping at Threads of Tradition or
through mail order. Check out the Challenge fabric
swatches above and then call the shop at 800.590.9755 and
give the style and color number of each fabric and the yardages
required.
Size...
Maximum 36" x 36" and Minimum 24" x 24"
Your quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions
fall within these guidelines.

additional quilts you are entering in other categories. Check in
for all pre-registered quilts, including Challenge

it is impossible for you to hand deliver your entry, please
complete the
special shipping instruction form...
and mail that form with your entry.
All qualifying
Challenge quilts will be hung together in a special
exhibit in the lobby of Founder's Hall during the week of Quilt
Fair 2008. Judging will be completed prior to the opening of
Quilt Fair. All Challenge quilts must include a cloth
label with the name of the quilt, the owner's name and address
sewn to the back of the entry. Challenge
quilt entries must also include a diagram that
identifies the name and location of each block used in the
quilt. This diagram must be temporarily attached to the front of
the quilt for check in and judging. Hanging
sleeves are no longer necessary.
