Spring is the perfect time to enjoy some adventures on the farm with your family! Plan a visit to Sauder Village on Saturday, May 11 to navigate your way through some favorite children’s literature and try your hand at some fun, farm experiences! From helping feed pigs, making a worm farm and washing clothes on a scrub board to playing old-fashioned games and making a rain stick . . . Spring on the Farm promises to be a wonderful day for families to create special memories at Sauder Village.

The first in the series of farm days, Spring on the Farm offers families a unique opportunity to enjoy some favorite stories, try hands-on activities and watch unique demonstrations. At the barnyard areas children will enjoy books like The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and Tractor Mac Arrives on the Farm while helping to feed the pigs and having their picture taken on a tractor! The barns will also be full on new baby animals including baby bunnies, chicks, kids and a new calf for guests to meet. Guests can also meet the horses, pigs and turkeys and watch cow and goat milking demonstrations.

At the Eicher Cabin children can hear Low Down Laundry Line Blues while helping to wash clothes on the scrub board. The Monster Who Ate My Peas will be shared at the Witmer Roth home as children have an opportunity to shell, eat, cook and plant a pea to take home! At the Elmira Depot the book Mailing May will be read and children will see how much it would cost to be mailed to Toledo! Ten Little Indians will be shared at Natives and Newcomers and children will make their very own rain stick to take home!

Other fun activities planned throughout the day include making a worm farm, learning about bees and honey in the Garden Shed and writing with a quill pen at the Log School. Children can make friendship bracelets at the 1928 Grime Home and play old-fashioned games on the Village Green.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to share so many great books and unique farm adventures with children this year during our Spring on the Farm event,” shared Chris Lankenau, Curator of Education. “We look forward to having families from throughout the region join us to make special memories on the farm!”

Historic Sauder Village is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and each Sunday afternoon from noon-4:00 p.m. The Historic Village is closed on Mondays, except holidays. Admission is $18.00 for adults and $12.00 for students ages 6-16. Children 5 and under are always free with family and Sauder Village members receive free admission to the Historic Village for an entire year. And again this year, children 16 and under are free every Sunday this season!

Other special events planned yet this spring include a Mother’s Day celebration on Sunday, May 12 with free admission for all Moms, the annual Antique Car Gathering on Saturday, May 18 and special hours/activities for the Memorial Day Weekend!
