Home school families from throughout the region are invited to attend Home School Days to be held September 6-8 at Sauder Village. Connect your children to local history, receive discounted admission rates, explore the spectacular 1920s Main Street, and enjoy unique demonstrations and hands-on activities!
Our historic interpreters and working craftsmen help bring history to life for students of all ages. Home School Days are a great time for families to have fun in the past while learning something new about history, crafts, science, and more.
Throughout Home School Days a variety of STEM activities (science, technology, education, and math) have been planned for children to enjoy in addition to engaging opportunities to explore Ohio’s rich history from 1803 through the 1920s! The History of Food Science will be explored throughout the historic village as well as The Her Story, Her History program.
Curriculum met with "Her Story Her History" and "Food Science"
The Witmer Roth home will be investigating the chemistry of making butter and what happens to the suspended fat globules in cream to obtain creamy delicious butter.
The Stuckey home will be exploring the single celled fungi yeast and how it is involved in the process of fermentation that gives us the tasty, appetizing bread we love to eat today.
The Grime home will be focusing on the process of historic home canning and bottling as a food preservation method. We will discuss the technique of proper sterilization which led to safer home food canning methods.
The Her Story, Her History will focus on Women in history whose character, intellect and passion influenced the world today!
The 1920s Main Street is sure to be a favorite stop for families. Guests can explore the Farmers and Merchants Bank, Schuck Jewelry Store, Stotzer Hardware, Elmira Depot, and the barbershop. The 1920s will come roaring to life as families take a peek at what’s playing on the big screen, buy sweet treats at the candy store, explore the grocery and clothing stores, visit the fire station, meet horses at the livery, and sip a chocolate malt at the soda fountain.
Throughout the Village, many talented craftsmen demonstrate their trade in places like the Spinning Shop, Pottery Shop, Tin Shop, Cooperage, Basket Shop, Weaving Shop, and Glassblowing Shop. The Walk Through Time Experience provides a chance to explore wigwams and a trading post at Natives & Newcomers and to visit historic homes, a log school, a barn, and beautiful gardens in the Pioneer Settlement Area. There is also plenty of great shopping and free rides on the Erie Express Train!
