Carving a Wizard

This is a perfect beginner project for woodcarving. Students will learn basic cuts used in woodcarving and put the techniques to use carving a wizard. Everyone will leave with at least one completed carving. After the carving is completed, students will have the opportunity to paint the carved figure using techniques developed specifically for wood. The instructor will provide all the tools needed to complete this project (wood, carving knife, safety glove, painting supplies).

Instructor Todd Martin began carving when he started to reflect on what he wanted to do when he retired. He bought a cheap set of knives and some bad wood and turned to YouTube. He was hooked. Since then, he has had the privilege of taking classes with some of the best caricature carvers in the nation, both in person and virtually. He has won local carving competitions, and most recently was presented with an Award of Excellence at the Sauder Village Woodcarver’s Show. His projects have been included in Woodcarving Illustrated and Chip Chats, the publication of the National Wood Carving Association.
