Continental Knitting with Sonja Downey
Skill Level – Beginner
Day/Time – Friday, February 9, 10:00 a.m. - Noon
Class Fee - $25.00
Maximum – 10 students (first come first served)
With the Continental Knitting technique, also known as German Knitting, the yarn is guided through the fingers of the left hand which creates a fluid knitting motion. Pieces knitted in the Continental Knitting have a slightly more dense appearance as good tension is easily controlled by winding the yarn around the index finger of the left hand. Continental Knitting comes in handy for Fair Isle knitting and it makes knitting on four needles a lot easier. In this class, we will practice the knit and purl stitch. Please bring some scrap yarn and the appropriate needles.

Inkle Loom Weaving with Joan Sheridan
Skill Level – Beginner
Day/Time – Saturday, February 10, 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. and 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Class Fee - $50
Maximum – 10 students (first come, first served)
A 20th century invention, the inkle loom (inkle means band) made bandweaving more accessible to the modern person. Extremely useful, woven bands were used before buttons, zippers, and hooks and eyes to keep clothing on and packages secure. Learn how to use this clever loom to create bands that can match your hand knit or crocheted garments. You will learn to use a computer program to design your own bands and how to warp the loom and weave. Students will need an inkle loom (instructor has several available for loan, but not enough for an entire class). The computer program is web-based and available free. To access it, students will need a smart phone, iPad or similar tablet or a computer with internet connectivity. If you do not have a device, that's okay. You can use one of the instructor's or look on with a neighbor.
Additional Fee: $15 fee payable to the instructor at beginning of class includes yarn, materials and full-color handout. Schacht looms may be preordered through the instructor for a 10% discount. To reserve a loaner loom or to purchase an inkle loom, send an email to joan@heritagespinning.com no later than two weeks prior to the retreat.
