Joanne & Tom Blodgett
The Blodgett's of Jackson, Michigan will be demonstrating both Saturday and Sunday the entire process of preparing flax and spinning it into linen.

In the history of textiles, the oldest know fabric is Linen; the earliest record of handspun cordage dates 15,000 B.C.E., which was the fibers of the flax plant hand-twisted into a thread. During Colonial times flax and linen were significant commodities of agricultural America; each family was expected to plant and harvest flax for export, then import linen fabric for clothing, toweling, bed coverings, etc.

A demonstration of the production of linen from flax with the steps needed – breaking, scutching, and hackling - to extract fiber from the flax plant, how it is spun into thread, and finally how the thread is woven into cloth will be shown. The tools used in the program are traditional – and are still used in many parts of the world. Throughout the program, past and present uses of flax and linen will be discussed, as well as the presentation of words and phrases that have their origins in “Straw Into Gold”.
