Amelia Anna (Kretz) Grime was the daughter of Bavarian immigrant parents, the wife of Gustave Grime and the mother of one daughter, Ethel. She was also a woman living through the changes of the 1920’s. The woman’s right to vote allowed the 1920’s woman to expand her role within her community and nation, while the rise of consumerism in America and mass advertising campaigns via magazines, newspapers, radio and movies inﬂuenced the social norms of the Northwest Ohio housewife.

The Roaring Twenties heralded a period of prosperity for many throughout the nation. However, some farm families were suﬀering under the early pressures of an agricultural recession. Despite this, access to electricity and the aﬀordability of new and improved labor saving appliances allowed American women the power to enjoy their new and changing world.

By visiting the Grime Homestead at Sauder Village you can see ﬁrsthand how Amelia held on to her traditional values by maintaining the Parlor as her mother had in the 1800s. Conversely, the dining room, which was the central room of the home, had a telephone, radio and phonograph by 1928. These modern items provided nightly entertainment for the family to enjoy on a daily basis.

From housewife to ﬂapper, we invite you to share your interpretation of how you envision the woman of the 1920’s, through fabric in our 2020 Quilt Show Challenge, Adoration of Amelia.

Construction Techniques:

Each Sauder Village Experience challenge entry must include a minimum of four fabrics from the Each Adoration of Amelia challenge entry must include a minimum of three fabrics from the approved Moda Marbles fabrics from Moda Fabrics as well as Amelia fabric designed by Sauder Village and printed through SpoonFlower for the 2020 Sauder Village Quilt Challenge. Borders and/or sashing may be added if desired.

Entry Requirements:

Each entry must also comply with all entry requirements and guidelines of the Sauder Village Quilt Show, which may be found online at: www.saudervillage.org/quiltshowexhibit. Since this is a design challenge, each entry must be designed, pieced and/or appliqued by a single artist; entries that have been designed and the top constructed by more than one person will not qualify for judging. If someone other than the quilt artist does the quilting, the quilter must be given credit on the “Quilted by” line on the entry form.

Size:

Maximum 36” x 36” / Minimum 24” by 24”. Your quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions fall within these guidelines.

Fabric:

For the 2020 challenge, we have selected six Moda Marbles by Moda Fabrics. The approved Moda Marbles are Pink Sherbert 9801, Dark Saddle 9881 78, Turkey Red 6854, Lavender 9812, Sweet Green 9880 34 and Key West Blue 9880 49. Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop worked with local designer Mindy Borer of Blackbird Designs to create our original fabric Amelia. The wallpaper in Gustave and Amelia’s bedroom in the Grime House inspired this original fabric design. 2020 Sauder Village Challenge fabric bundles are available for purchase at Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop. Each bundle will include six fat quarters of the selected Moda Marbles and a half yard of Amelia. To qualify for the challenge each entrant’s quilt must include at least three of the selected Moda Marbles fabric and Amelia fabric for the front and binding of the quilt. The entrant may also include any single light background to complement their design as long as they have three of the selected Moda Marbles as well as Amelia fabric.

We’d love to have you visit us personally to pick up your fabric bundle, but if that is not possible, challenge fabrics may be ordered by calling Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop at 419-445-9610 or 800-590-9755 ext. 3011, or by email at quilts@saudervillage.org. All orders for fabric bundles and/or additional yardage of any selected fabrics will be priced according to current retail prices including tax, shipping and handling.

Registration:

Please register for the challenge by completing the quilt registration form, which will be available online January, 2020 at saudervillage.org. Your challenge quilt must be pre-registered. Check in for all pre-registered quilts, including Challenge quilts, will be Sunday, July 12, 2020 from 1:30-4:00 pm. If it is not possible for you to hand deliver your entry, please complete the special shipping instruction form that is also available online and mail that form with your entry.

All qualifying Adoration of Amelia challenge quilts will be hung together in a special exhibit in Founder’s Hall during the week of Sauder Village Quilt Show 2020. Judging will be completed prior to opening of the Quilt Show.

Pick up:

Sunday, July 19, 2020 at 4:30 pm at Founders Hall. All entries must remain the entire length of the show.
