Not Quite Black & White Quilt Challenge 2023

Not Quite Black & White

Black and white.  Black is defined as the complete absence of color and white as the presence of all colors simultaneously.  Black and white have their places on the opposite ends of the color spectrum.  Take a moment to consider what images come to mind when you think about black and white.  Maybe you think about dark and light, or day and night, or positive and negative.  This opposition of black and white has us asking one important question.  How can you as a quilt artist envision bringing these opposites together?  This question is the inspiration for the 2023 Sauder Village Quilt Challenge and we look forward to seeing your answer!

Construction Techniques:

Each Not Quite Black & White challenge bundle contains one focus fabric (the fabric with some color), three black and white prints, and two solids (black and white).  All challenge entries must include all of the fabrics in the challenge bundle.  Participants may choose to add two solid fabrics that coordinate with the focus fabric in the challenge bundle.  The binding for each entry can be from any fabric of your choice.

Entry Requirements:

Each entry must comply with all entry requirements and guidelines of the Sauder Village Quilt Show, found on this webpage. This is a design challenge and each entry must be designed, pieced and/or appliqued by a single artist.  Entries that have been designed and constructed by more than one person will not qualify for judging.  If someone other than the quilt artist does the quilting, the quilter must be given credit on the “Quilted by” line on the entry form.

Size:

Maximum  36” x 36” / Minimum 24” x 24”.  Your quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions fall within these guidelines.

Fabric:

For the 2023 Not Quite Black & White challenge, we have selected four fabrics from the fabric line “Black, White and Bright” by Christa Watson, our guest artist for 2023 Quilt Show and Century Solids from Andover Fabrics.

To purchase your challenge bundle, please stop by Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop.  We would love to have you visit us in person, but if that is not possible, bundles may be ordered by calling the quilt shop @ 419-445-9610 or 1-800-590-9755 ext. 3011, or by email at quilts@saudervillage.org.  All orders for challenge bundles and any additional fabrics will be sold according to current retail prices including tax, shipping and handling.

Registration:

Please register for the challenge by completing the quilt registration form, which will be available online in January/February 2023.  All challenge quilts must be pre-registered.  Details on quilt check-in for all pre-registered quilts will also be available in January/February 2023.  If it is not possible for you to hand deliver your entry, please complete the special shipping instruction form that is also available online and mail that form with your entry.

All Not Quite Black & White challenge quilts will be hung together in a special exhibit in Founder’s Hall during the 2023 Sauder Village Quilt Show.  Judging will be completed prior to the opening of the quilt show.

Pick up:

All challenge entries must remain on display the entire length of the show.  Quilts may be picked up at the close of the show.
