The word “sampler” evokes the image of gentle work. It’s a kind of needlework diary, an example of knowledge and developing skill and a reference tool for future stitching.

A needlework sampler often includes the alphabet, numerals, images, motifs, stitches, decorative borders, a date, and the name or initials of its maker.

If you can imagine some of these same elements plus some new ideas for hooking images in an interesting hooked rug design, this is your retreat.

Choose one of our three 18” x 30” sampler designs ($65 pattern) or create your own (with the teacher’s hints prior to class) and prepare to learn some fool-proof techniques for hooking letters, numbers, and words.

We will cover basic techniques—plain, precise, and extraordinary—along with some interesting adaptations of the typical techniques used for hooking letters.

You can develop a sophisticated color plan or use up scraps and left-over noodles. You may decide to finish the sampler rug or use it as a reference tool for future hooking, along with the detailed reference and instructional materials ($25).

Hooking words will be part of your lexicon for all future projects.

LEVEL:   Intermediate – students must have basic rug hooking knowledge and experience. This retreat will focus on the specific techniques and topics listed by the instructor; students are not required to have knowledge or experience in those specific areas.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:  Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades #4/6/8, hook, wool & noodles, pencil, ruler, black Sharpie marker. Optional: Linen backing (if you are providing your own pattern).
