Special Exhibits

for Rug Hooking Week 2019

Special Exhibits are collections of innovative and original works done by an individual or group of artists which represent contemporary or historic themes, concepts, ideas, techniques, and educational and regional projects.

Rug Hooking Week offers classes relevant to these exhibits so that you may gain insight and learn techniques directly from the artist, authority or curator. You will find more information on the classes listed with each exhibit and on the Retreat and Workshop pages.

Borrowed from private collectors, these hooked rugs have quite a provenance of owners and background stories. The majority have never been exhibited anywhere. This collection includes rugs attributed to James & Mercedes Hutchinson (not previously exhibited in the 2016 Feature Exhibit), and rugs collected by notable collectors and antique dealers such as Ronnie Newman and Bernie Plomp.

If you have an antique hooked, shirred, appliqued, etc. piece you would like to share in the Antique Hooked Rugs Exhibit, please contact us with more info: wrighttraditions@aol.com

Fascinators & Hats

Fascinators-special-exhibit

This is an Invitational Challenge open to all artists to create a 3-dimensional Fascinator* or hat. The piece must include some hooking, but does not have to be hooked entirely. It may also include other forms of textile art techniques and materials.

From January 1 to March 31, we invite artists to submit the following: a photo of your fascinator/hat along with the Title, Designer’s Name, & Maker’s Name with your Contact Info to: wrighttraditions@aol.com We will then contact you in April with more information.

These fascinators and hats will be eligible for a special People’s Choice Award and Ribbon.

*A fascinator is a headpiece or style of millinery. Since the 1990’s the term refers to a type of formal headwear worn as an alternative to the hat; it is usually a decorative design attached to a headband. Fascinators are common in the United Kingdom and often seen at royal events, but have gained popularity here in the United States too.

North American Oriental Rugs

North-American-Oriental-Rugs-special-exhibitWhen did North American’s start copying and transforming Middle Eastern Oriental rug patterns? How did the English Arts & Crafts Movement, traditional florals and even Crewel influence these pattern? What are the subtle differences you should look for? What makes them uniquely different from “Turkish” and “Persian” Oriental rugs?

Sandra Brown has been writing “how to” articles for Rug Hooking Magazine on this very topic. In this Special Exhibit, Sandra has gathered some wonderful examples of North American Oriental Rugs.
