DESCRIPTION:

Molly-Colegrove-hooked-rug-House-in-Winter-Growing-In-EarthThis retreat is all about architecture in a landscape setting. Molly loves barns in all their many forms and loves to figure out how to work out an interesting landscape around them. She likes using a variety of cuts and also a large variety of mixed materials including various yarns and fibers.  Most of the time she never sticks to a single cut of wool, but prefers to mix everything up.  She’s happy with any choice you make as regards cut of wool and preference of fiber though. 

We will explore different techniques that may compliment your design, such as adding mixed media, felting, quilting to add dimension and interest. At the end of the retreat, Molly hopes you will feel comfortable with some new techniques that you can use on future rugs. 

You can bring your own design, or use one of Molly’s. She has taken many photos of barns over the years, and you can feel free to choose one of those, or bring your own pattern to work on, or both.  Molly will have a wide variety of fibers available including handspun yarn of many types, roving, and mixed media pieces from wood and porcelain. You can also feel free to bring along any and all supplies you think will make your barn come to life.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, and any wool or yarn that you find interesting. 

BIO: 

Molly has been in love with creating art and objects from as early as she can remember. As a very young child weekly trips to the bead store were her favorite outing. Her mother was a knitter, so yarn stores were always on the list of places to stop too. Molly began doing needlework and weaving in her teens and started rug hooking in 1991. She is mainly self-taught, and loves to experiment and play with the medium, trying to push the limits of what can be done with it.

Her husband Bob, also an Art major in college has been a photographer for over 50 years, and has a huge stash of photos to draw upon for inspiration. Her sculptural pieces are mostly just from imagination. She has been teaching rug hooking and fiber art classes for more than ten years at such venues as: GMRHG Hooked in the Mountains Rug Show, VT, Habersham Rug School, NY, Mayflower Rug Guild, MA, and Finger Lakes Fiber Arts Guild, NY as well as regional studios and museums.

Her work has been exhibited in: The Art of Playing Cards: Invitational Traveling Exhibit with Linda Rae Coughlin, Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine, Invitational show, "Out of the Loop: Innovations in Hooking", Brookfield Craft Center, Brookfield Ct. Invitational Show, "Pushing the Limits: New Concepts in Rug Hooking", Newtown Hooked Rug Show, Newtown, Ct. Juried Show, "Icons of America" American Folk Art Museum, New York, New York, Juried Contest, "Beadwork IV: The Beaded Figure" Juried Traveling Exhibit, traveled throughout the United States at many venues including Museum of Art and Design in New York, New York, "Beadwork III: The Beaded Cloth" Juried Traveling Exhibit , Traveled throughout the United States to many venues, One person Show at the Artful Dodger Art Gallery in Hamilton, NY, "Quilt=Art=Quilts" Juried Exhibit at the Schweinfurth Museum in Skaneateles, NY, and at Rug Hooking Week at Sauder Village. Her work has also been featured in the following publications: Hooked Rug Landscapes, Modern Hooked Rugs, A Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XVI and XIII, Beaded Embellishment, "Hooked Vessels" Rug Hooking Magazine March/April 2009, Beadwork IV: The Beaded Figure, Beadwork Magazine, April 2005, and Beadwork III: The Beaded Cloth, Beadwork Magazine, April 2003.
