DESCRIPTION:  

Krueger-Joyce-blue-square-OneThird-2020Traditional Bargello is a needlepoint stitch using vertical stitches laid in a mathematical pattern to create motifs. The patterns are naturally geometric, but can be used to create stylized motifs like flowers, fruits, and hearts. The colors can be vibrant and contemporary or softly traditional using shaded and textured wools. Joyce has adapted the traditional Bargello stitch to rug hooking.

Contrary to the definition of Bargello - you do not need to be a mathematical person for this retreat. Just the opposite, the highest number you will need to count to is ten.

Joyce will show you how to translate this stunning embroidery method into a striking hooking technique. She will start the class by discussing hooking with Creative Stitches, then students will have time to practice. After you have mastered this technique, Joyce will help you design your own Bargello pattern using graph paper. This will be the beginning of your design, then you can design as you hook or design the complete pattern and then start hooking.

Krueger-Joyce-pink-red-rug-FullWidth-2020The use of color is very important in Bargello. Joyce will discuss different color paths to create an outstanding Bargello piece. You will be working with cuts #5, #6, or #7, which will depend on the backing you select and your hooking technique.

In class, Joyce will have Bargello resources and photos for ideas and inspiration. Also available in class, will be an assortment of wools, which are perfect for Bargello projects. 

Before you leave this retreat, Joyce will talk about and show you different finishing techniques that you can apply to your Bargello hooked piece, such as applying the binding so none of the backing shows on the edges, framing, and securing the back of the piece.

Intermediate – students must have a basic rug hooking knowledge and experience.


STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: 
Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades #5, 6, & 7, and hooks. For designing your pattern, bring pencils, eraser, scotch tape, colored pencils, and Sharpie black and red permanent markers (extra fine point). OPTIONAL: Joyce will have Monks cloth, rug warp and regular linen available for purchase, or you can bring your own.

BIO: 

Joyce has been designing and creating traditional hooked rugs for 44 years. Learning to hook with an interest group, she has continued her learning by traveling to study with well-known rug hooking teachers. 

Joyce Krueger is an accredited McGown Teacher, former Director of the Southern McGown Teachers’ Workshop and past secretary of ATHA. A member of the McGown Guild, ATHA, and the Cream City Rug Hooking Guild. She has taught at rug schools nationally and internationally, at private rug groups, and currently has classes in her home studio in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Krueger-Joyce-blue-red-rug-Quarter-2020Joyce’s articles about various creative aspects of rug hooking have been published in Rug Hooking Magazine, the ATHA Newsletter and the McGown Newsletter. Her work has also been featured on the cover of Rug Hooking Magazine, ATHA Newsletter. Joyce’s rug have received awards at Sauder Village, the Wisconsin State Fair, and she is a member of the Celebrations Hall of Fame.

Joyce teaches all aspect of rug hooking, both fine and wide cuts, with a shaded or a primitive look. Joyce enjoys teaching original designs, helping students with the design process, and encouraging us in elevating our technique.
