Santa-in-casual-hat-hooked-rug-DonnaHrkmanDESCRIPTION:  We know that we create heirlooms when we hook. Donna decided to offer a special set of designs that are fun to hook and will become a cherished holiday piece to be enjoyed for years to come.

The beauty of this project is that while you’re creating a festive Christmas mat or pillow top, you’re also learning: how to hook a realistic face and hair, as well as learning about shading fabric for a three dimensional look. The mats measure 14” x 17” and are hand drawn and shaded on linen. Donna has a dozen different Santa faces and themes to select from on her website, only a few are represented here with the workshop photos. Be sure to order your pattern well in advance of class.

Most of the hooking will be done in smaller cuts to deliver the amount of detail that makes the Santa look real, so think of 3,4,5 cuts. Donna will bring her cutter with a #3 if you don't have one.

Santa Claus is coming to town this August at Rug Hooking Week!

LEVEL:  Intermediate – this is an advanced techniques workshop.

SUPPLY DESCRIPTION: Select one of Donna’s Santa patterns prior to class. The patterns measure 14” x 17” and are hand drawn on bleached linen. Included in your supplies is a wool bundle of skin tones in three values, along with white or cream wool and yarn to hook the beards and hair. Optional: Donna will bring a variety of dyed wool for sale, which can be used for Santa's suit and the various backgrounds.

STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING:  basic hooking supplies: frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades #3, 4, & 5, hook, and printed handout. Donna will bring her cutter with a #3 blade for those who don't have that size. Students may bring other supplies they would like to use in this project.
