Learn how to create depth in flowers, pictorials, geometrics, people and even simple primitive rugs. Depth is created with a lot of things, such as changing the temperature of a color, or the brightness, but value does most of the work. When planning a rug, we often talk about color planning, but it is really value planning that makes the rug shine.

Students can bring any rug pattern, but if you are unsure which pattern will benefit the most from the class, you can discuss this with Cindi before the class. In fact, via telephone or video conference (all you need is a smart phone, tablet or computer), each student will have a planning session with Cindi in the months before the workshop. This will avoid that awkward first day of waiting for the teacher’s help. Start hooking right away or wait until the workshop to start hooking, you decide.

Gay-Cindi-OneThird-flower-stool-2020Students will be encouraged to work toward finding their own style and method of rug hooking. All cut sizes can be used in this retreat. There are no rules in rug hooking, only guidelines that you can choose to follow or not.

This is an open class with a focus on creating depth. Cindi has prepared many topics to talk about in class, but the class will morph into what the students in the class want to talk about. Cindi loves teaching (maybe even more than hooking) and shares freely. No question will go unanswered.

Basic - Students must have basic rug hooking knowledge and experience.

Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades-in your choice of sizes, hook, and pattern. If you would like to hook one of Cindi’s patterns, please see her website.

Cindi has a special place in her heart for Sauder Village. She attended her first class here after hooking for only a month. She hasn’t missed a year since.

After leaving a high stress job as a construction project manager and estimator, Cindi found rug hooking while watching TV. She read every book she could find and scoured the internet in 2000. There wasn’t much out there so the next year she put up a website to document what she was learning.

Today Cindi has 2 main websites with a blog, online store, podcast, rug hooking courses and a membership for ongoing education. She broadcasts weekly on Friday at 4pm EST, delivering a new lesson every week and taking questions about the topic she is teaching. You can register on her website and learn more about learning rug hooking online.

Cindi prefers to teach online or in her studio just east of Bowling Green, Ohio. Cindi stopped teaching regularly on the road in 2018. Sauder Village is the only public workshop Cindi will be teaching in 2021.
