Step into Gene’s world of creativity, fun and education. Students will spend 3 days working with Gene on any hooking or proddy pattern they like.

Hooking --- Gene is a master at teaching students how to enhance and improve their hooking skills, techniques, style, and use of color. Using a pattern of your choice or one of Gene’s many designs, he will help students find dramatic, luscious colors that will make their rug POP!

Shepherd-R2Proddy --- Another reason for the POP in Gene’s rugs is due to the inclusion of very detailed, realistic prodded motifs and 3-D embellishments, to create a combined hooked and prodded mat. Gene has worked hard to develop shaped prodding methods to create realistic-looking flowers and motifs, and he will share his insight with you. He has also studied the history and techniques of traditional proddy, and enjoys teaching students how to make mats worked from the backside and entirely with unshaped strips. Proddy tools and materials will be covered along with tips on finishing proddy mats or adding proddy borders to hooked mats.

Intermediate – Students must have a basic rug hooking knowledge and experience. No prior proddy experience is required.

Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades (suitable for your project, see recommendations above), hook &/or proddy tool, and pattern. If you would like one of Gene’s patterns or specialty bent hooks, please see his website. Depending on your project, Gene may suggest other supplies.

Described as a “self-taught artist who hooks by ear,” Gene does commission work, designs, dyes, develops tools, teaches and writes about rug hooking. His work has been featured in Rug Hooking Magazine, ATHA Newsletter and Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs. As an Author, Editor, Artist or Producer his work includes: The Rug Hooker’s Bible, Rug Hooking at Home DVD series, Prodded Hooking for a Three-Dimensional Effect book/DVD set, Prepared to Dye book and 3-disc DVD set, instructional downloads and tutorials on his web site. Gene's Internet Rug Camp library offers more than 75 videos and his online store offers the unique rug hooking supplies that he uses.

Gene was been director of the Cambria Pines Rug Camp, Cambria, CA, for 20 years. He teaches regularly in Southern California as well as camps and workshops in the US and overseas. After 40 years as a pastor, he retired to concentrate full time on rug hooking. He lives in Anaheim, California, with his wife Marsha.Shepherd-R6
