Miller-Kris-lady-liberty-Half-2020

Americana is not just the symbols of Lady Liberty, Uncle Sam or the Grand Old Flag. It celebrates the American culture that is exclusively characteristic of our country. Most often described as “folk art,” its roots are inspired by childhood memories, nostalgic images, depictions of rural life, folklore, and all things and ideas unique to the United States.

Using textured wools and wide cuts (#8 and above), Kris will help you create your own charming Americana rug. She enjoys working one-on-one with each student to develop a pleasing color plan that will be soft and muted. During the week, Kris will teach tips, tricks, and techniques that will make your rug hooking journey fun and easy. Included is Kris’s popular demo on hooking eyes and how to hook a perfect small star with a #9 cut.

Miller-Kris-halloween-Half-2020Kris will bring a large selection of textured wools, both overdyed and off the bolt colors, along with some alternative hooking materials such as sari ribbon, paisley, and sheep curls. Students may also bring their own wool and materials.

Students can select a primitive pattern from Kris’ website or bring one of their own, as long as it fits the criteria for Americana. Suggestions include patriotic themes, antique rug adaptations, animals, primitive florals, Halloween designs, and vintage Santa/Christmas themes. Please choose a pattern that is suitable for cuts #8 or wider. Hand-torn strips are also welcome!

LEVEL:

Basic - Students must have basic rug hooking knowledge and experience.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:
Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades #8 & larger, hook (preferably one with a wide shank), and pattern of your choice. Optional: some of your own wool and materials which you would like to use in this project.
