Feller-R1DESCRIPTION:

Publicly, we have all experienced upheaval in our life, especially during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Privately, upheaval happens in our life journey all the time and on many levels. How can these feelings be expressed and what story do you want to tell? Through ART!

With Susan’s guidance and resources, students will develop a personal writing style, identify a message or issue to focus on, and then design a statement rug that communicates these feelings and story.

Learn each of the design steps that it takes to convey your thoughts, feelings and story into a well-developed design. Students will transfer that design onto backing and then Susan will guide them through her tips and techniques to successfully express those thoughts and feelings with color and texture. There will be time to pull loops while continuing to learn how to tell your story. The goal is to create a poignant piece of focused textile art.

Feller-R2How do you share your story and art with the world? Various social media platforms will be discussed along with how to create blog posts, websites, videos, and podcasts. Learn how to have a public voice and use social media to your advantage through writing exercises for each of these audiences.

This retreat is for those who have an interest in developing both writing and designing skills, along with learning how to put themselves and their stories into textile art. The aim is to feel confident in your own visual and verbal identity - branding yourself. Leave the retreat with a memorable message for future generations.

Feller-R4BIO:

Susan L. Feller works from her studio in West Virginia promoting awareness of social issues and the human impact on our environment through art and writing. She has learned how to communicate in the 21st century while continuing to promote the traditional handcrafts of centuries past.

Susan has included rug hooking in her toolbox of textile techniques since 1994. The internet opened our craft/art globally both commercially and through organizations. Navigating the challenges of communicating visual work on websites and social media fills some of her studio time in West Virginia.

Serving on the Editorial Board for Rug Hooking Magazine, past boards of ATHA and TIGHR, as curator and judge of international exhibits, networking is inherent in Susan’s approach to the contemporary art world.
