Join us in this introduction to rug hooking class and develop a new passion! Rug hooking is basically a stress-free art. It is like coloring except we will be using beautiful wool instead of crayons! Nola will introduce you to primitive rug hooking covering the equipment, supplies and techniques. After that, students will jump right in to the fun of actually hooking a small mat that can be used as a chair pad, trivet or a wall piece. At the end of this class, you will be shown everything you need to know in order to hook and finish an entire rug!

Nola will discuss when and how to use equipment and supplies related to rug hooking, touching on the differences between wide cut or primitive style projects and narrow or fine cut projects. Students will then be guided through the basic techniques as they pull up their first loops on this 10 ½” x 7 ¾" Fragrant Floral design using pre-cut # 6 wool strips. Nola will discuss cutters and the various cut sizes as well as demonstrate various finishing techniques such as whipstitching, crocheting, and the herringbone. All of which will be helpful in your future projects!

In class, students will have the opportunity to borrow and use various hooking frames on loan from Rug Hooking Week vendors. After class, students have the option to purchase frames. 

Nola also leads a Savvy Shopper Walk & Talk on Wednesday night, which would be very helpful to new rug hookers, giving insight to equipment and supplies so that you can make good choices to suit your own style and needs.

Since basic rug hooking skills are required for many of our other classes, once you have taken this class, you’ll be ready to take on a new project with confidence and are welcome to register for the next level of our classes.

Level: Everyone welcome, no prior rug hooking knowledge or experience required. This class is open to both adults and children (age 12 and older).

Supply/Kit Description: 10 ½” x 7 ¾" pattern, pre-cut wool strips, hook, yarn, jumbo tapestry needle, binding tape, instructions, and a photo of the finished mat.   

Students Need To Bring: Scissors, pen and paper.


Bio: 

Nola A. Heidbreder teaches rug hooking and fiber art at her studio in St. Louis and across the country. Her work has been featured in publications such as Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion Magazine, Rug Hooking Magazine, ATHA newsletter, Hooked on Rugs, Creative Hooker, Hooked on Wool, Hooked Rugs Today, Finishing Rugs, Contemporary Hooked Rugs and in The “Art” of Playing Cards. Working with Sister Linda Pietz, they wrote the books Knitting Rugs, Crocheting Rugs and Crocheted Baskets. Their fourth book Knitted Baskets debuted in fall of 2017! Nola has also authored 3 cookbooks, Beautiful Backgrounds, and Houska Dye Recipe book.

Nola’s work has been exhibited at the: Folk Art Museum, New York City; Shelburne Museum, Vermont; Sauder Village, Archbold, OH; Houska Gallery, St. Louis, MO; Tiadaghton House, Lebanon, IL; Missouri State Fair; Barren’s Art Center, New Jersey; & Schwenkfelder Heritage Museum, PA.
