small-rug-hooked-pieces-Julie-ThomasDescription:  Have you always admired the beauty of those miniature punch needle pieces you’ve seen in all the needlework stores or online? Now is your opportunity to learn how to do it with Julie from The Old Tattered Flag and Ultra Punch Needle®.

Julie will walk you through the basics of punch needle embroidery, everything from the types of needles, fabrics, threads and designs. During class, she will cover color planning, numbers of strands to use, and exactly how and where they should be used and even teach you how to draw your own designs. Julie will also explain the importance of using hand dyed threads and how to use them in your work. In class, Julie will have many of her finished pieces to view, for inspiration.

Ultra-PunchStudents will be working on an Ultra Punch - Sampler pattern printed on Weavers cloth. The sampler includes four designs: 3" Star, 1 ¼” Heart, 2 ½” x 4" Coneflower and 2" x 5" Vine. The proper threads to use with this sampler will be included.

This sampler is the perfect teaching tool as students will learn basic straight-line punching to develop the proper punching technique, then move on to the other shapes and designs in the sampler that will teach points, filling in, curves, and shaping.  Student will feel confident in their punching when they have completed the Sampler pattern and will be able to successfully move on to any other punch needle design.

Julie will demonstrate finishing techniques for your punched pieces, including: basic backing, twisted wool edge, braided edging, cording, and using a variety of fibers for edging as well as different ways to mount your punch needle pieces to frames, antiques, etc.

Students will then be able to make a necklace or ornaments from their punched pieces when finished.

(Please note: this is a punch needle with embroidery floss workshop, not to be confused with a rug hooking with a hook & wool, or a punch needle/punch hooking with yarn workshop.)

flowers rug hooked mat Bio:  Julie Thomas or as most know her, the daughter and punching half of The Old Tattered Flag has been punching since 2003. Julie stumbled upon the craft of miniature punch needle in Liberty, Missouri, had a quick, in shop, tutorial and bought her first, tiny, single strand punch needle pattern. From that point on a deep love of the craft developed. In the past 17 years, Julie has developed a pattern line of over 200 designs for punch needle and has since expanded from the tiny, single strand to punching with 6 strands. Her patterns are considered to be on the larger side to accommodate the thicker threads. Julie’s designs are offered three ways; rug hooking, punch needle and wool applique. Julie will never classify herself through any one style, though the primitive style is her favorite she sometimes leans toward the more traditional. She loves the muted tones of the primitive style, sometimes she opts for bold, rich colors in her pieces.

fringe-flower-with-black-birds-Julie-ThomasJulie has been featured in Create and Decorate, The Wool Street Journal, Rug Hooking Magazine, Woolworks and is a regular contributor to Punch Needle and Primitive Stitcher magazine. Tattered and Timeless, a book of rug hooking, and punch needle designs will be released in the Fall of 2020. In 2018, The Old Tattered Flag took ownership of the Ultra Punch Needle®, the #1 best-selling punch needle on the market. Julie has taught punch needle throughout the East Coast, in her shop and also here at Sauder Village.
