Paisley provides a form for a whimsical flow of color and design. This retreat will focus on flowing color through this form. The pattern Paisley Magic has design motifs large enough for the beauty of the wool to shine through.

Color is the element that adds emotion and sparkle to a project. As rug hookers we are challenged to express ourselves in our art work. This means every rug can have its own personality and express the personality of the creator. Our retreat goal is to develop greater confidence combining wools to create your own unique color palette.

We will explore color theory in this class - including how to combine hues, blend or contrast hues, and make them sparkle or mute. One challenge will be to break down the color wheel so it becomes a useful tool. We will focus on the following: warm vs cool colors, color personality, color schemes and the importance of values. Good use of value can make or break a rug. What is intensity and how do we use it? Let’s find new ways to use your favorite hues.

We will discuss the importance of outlines. What size cut and color to use for your outline depends on the effect you are trying to create with your outline. Also, we will explore how to pick backgrounds and how to expand a color scheme.

When Angela contacts students, she will give you the option to select from 3 sizes of the Paisley Magic pattern - 18”x18”, 20”x 30” (not pictured), and 25”x 40” - or custom sizes may be discussed with Angela. During the planning process, Angela will discuss wool options and color choice preferences too. Students will be using multiple cuts #5-8 or #4-7 in the pattern. The patterns will be sent to students in advance, so that you may become familiar with the motifs.

Angela will be bringing a large selection of dyed wool and “as is wool”. The students will have opportunity to explore combining 2 or more textures together, combining textured wools with spot dyes, and the effects using dip dyed wools.

Angela enjoys the excitement and exhilaration that comes when students create rugs that express their personality. Students will be asked to bring some of their favorite wools. This can be “as is” wool, spot dyed, and even dip dyed wool. This will be a great way to start developing your pallet.
