Unlock your creativity in this three-day transformative retreat with April DeConick. Explore the “other” side of rug hooking by immersing yourself in the creative process as you learn how to use marks, color, and texture to express yourself and create meaningful abstract art rugs. You will learn about the emergence of abstract art in the twentieth century and be inspired by the works of master painters and fiber artists. April will take you step-by-step through the processes that inform abstract artists. She will teach techniques that she has developed to create light and use color successfully in her wool compositions.

The first day of the retreat will be filled with fun and carefree practices that will help you create your own abstract pattern by the end of the day. This will include “plein air” exercises using your cell phone camera to capture images for your designs. Instruction in design and composition will be given. The second day of the retreat you will focus on finishing your abstract pattern and transferring it to linen. You will learn all about color and effective color combinations. By the end of the day, you will have color planned your rug. The third day of the retreat you will begin hooking your rug, in any cut size, and resolving any final questions before going home with the confidence to finish your rug and create more abstract art rugs in the future.
