Description:

In this workshop you will learn how to make 3-Dimensional shapes with your hooked design. We’ll be drawing your “favorite rock” that you’ve selected from a time or place that was special to you. Another option will be to pick out a Maine rock, which Susan will bring to the workshop, there will be several beauties to choose from.

Susan has mastered a number of interesting dimensional techniques with embellishments, and she will be teaching you how to use them, while you are building your rock. Your creation will be hooked entirely with yarn, including earth tone hand-dyed yarns. Other yarns will be available - if you want to be “Over the Top” creative!

There are a number of options for your completed rock, including: making it into a pin cushion, starting a stone cairn, or adding a needle felted design.

This may seem like a simple topic, but you will soon see how the simple rock can become a piece of fiber art that is so life-like, dimensional, and stunningly beautiful.

Living on a Maine island with the sea at her backdoor, Susan has studied the beauty of her surroundings and learned how to capture those details in her award-winning fiber art - which she shares with us this year in the Special Exhibit - Island Life Old & New. In this workshop, Susan will share her skills and talents, and there’s lots of fun in store for you too.

BIO:

Susan Ferraro has been creating nature fiber art professionally for over 25 years. She earned her degree in Design and went forward to produce and exhibit award winning art quilts in museums, galleries, and art shows around the country.

Several years before moving to Maine, she often visited its rugged coast and grew to love everything about it. She also became interested in changing her fiber art mode from quilting to rug making. The beauty of traditional hand hooked rugs was particularly exciting, especially sculpted Waldoboro rugs. Now, a full-time resident of Bailey Island, Maine, Susan passionately hooks rugs, sculpture, and mats. Her designs illustrate a combination of traditional rug hooking with unique dimensional features. Maine has much to offer for endless inspiration.
