Description: Sojourner Truth ( slave name Isabella or Belle ) was born to a Dutch couple who owned a farm in New York in or around 1792. She spoke only Dutch and was never given any education so that she was never able to read or write. Despite the hardships of being born a slave, and because of her ardent belief in the human spirit and her love of God, she became a force for the abolitionist movement as well as the suffragist movement. Her most famous speech was given in Akron, Ohio at a women's rights convention and for which the rug is named. All women today stand on her shoulders.
