DESCRIPTION:

A 2–sided piece of fiber art is a wonderful way to be able to use your piece throughout the year – with one design on the front and a different design on the back! This isn’t --- 2 completed patterns which are then attached, it’s one 2-sided pattern hooked or punched so that when completed one design appears on the front and another completely different design appears on the back…. It’s MAGIC!

This method of Hooking and/or Punching is for the individual that wants to challenge themselves and must be prepared to concentrate and focus on their piece as it is developing in front of their eyes. This Retreat will take your skills to a new level!

Kevin will discuss the origins of the 2–sided Hooking and Punching process, then jump right into the project. The class designs are simple so that you have plenty of time to practice and master the 2-sided technique, and ensures that Kevin has time to discuss and cover the finishing process. He will also show you examples of other 2-sided projects, to inspire you to design your own future projects.

Students will all be working on the same pattern, a charming Summer Sailboat and Winter Snowflake, however you will have the choice of method. If you are a rug hooker or puncher or both, the different methods are listed with the first listed method being the least challenging and the last method being the most challenging:

2 – Sided Rug Hooking with wool strips ($76 kit)

2 – Sided Rug Hooking with yarn ($51 kit)

2 – Sided Rug Punching with yarn ($51 kit)

2 – Sided with 1-side Rug Punching with yarn & 1-side Rug Hooking with wool strips ($63.50 kit)

In this Retreat, the supplies are more like a workshop kit, and include: pattern (Rug Punching on Monk’s Cloth/Rug Hooking on Rug Warp), & all yarns or wools needed to complete the project. Oxford Punch Needles and Gripper Frames are NOT included in the Kits but will be available to use or purchase during the retreat.

The finished size of the 2-sided project measures 14"x14". We will be using 100% wool, Briggs & Little 2 ply yarn or #5 cut wool strips from Dorr Wool – in a mix of as-is and hand-dyed colors. All students will have the option to use during class or purchase: 20"x20" Gripper Frames and Oxford Punch Needles.

When Kevin contacts students prior to class, they will select their method of Hooking &/or Punching, and he will answer any project questions.

BIO:

Kevin was born and raised in small town Amherst, Nova Scotia and is now settled in Shemogue, New Brunswick. He started his arts path in his early teens with oil painting, to be followed by tole painting which he successfully taught for 5 years. After many forays in the fiber arts, including punch needle embroidery, cross stitch, needlepoint and latch hook, Kevin was introduced to traditional rug hooking by his mother.  Kevin has evolved into punch needle rug hooking where he has found great peace and relaxation in using the Amy Oxford Punch Needle.

He is a Certified Oxford Punch Needle Rug Hooking Instructor and teaches classes throughout the Maritime Provinces in Canada, and is excited to spread the joy of punch needle rug hooking. In 2020, Kevin built his 400 square foot Studio where he offers punch needle rug hooking classes as well as sells basic supplies for both traditional rug hooking and punch needle rug hooking. Kevin has also enjoyed traveling to teach the art of punch needle rug hooking throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine and has become an annual instructor at The Hooked Rug Museum of North America in Hubbards, Nova Scotia.
