Together, let’s find out what you consider a primitive rug and then we will get busy creating it! What makes a rug primitive is one of the topics that Cammie will discuss during this Retreat, along with covering different primitive hooking techniques and finishing methods. Cammie works with subtle, low contrast, hand dyed wool, along with plaids and textures to give her rugs that aged look. She will show you how and when to use them in your rug. She enjoys playing with the shapes and motifs within her rugs and then finishing her rugs with creative techniques.

Students can select one of Cammie’s primitive patterns ranging from Antique Adaptations, Animals, Florals, Samplers and Seasonal designs, or she will help you customize the primitive pattern of your choice. During the Retreat, she will discuss and demonstrate primitive techniques such as: beading, hiding tails and trimming wool and anything else that comes up during the retreat – which will become a class demonstration and discussion.

Cammie loves to incorporate textures, plaids, dyed, as-is, and other types of wool and fabric in her own rugs and will show you how and when to use them in your rug with wide cuts #8 and up. She will also talk about using her soft and muted hand-dyed wool into your rug to achieve that subtle or low contrast look.

Cammie is well known for her creative rug finishes, such as: Lamb’s tongues, applique, wool covered cording, scrappy, and quilted, just to name a few. She will show you finishing examples, help you select the right technique, and demonstrate the process.

Basic - Students must have a basic rug hooking knowledge and experience.

RETREAT PROJECTS & SUPPLIES:

The teacher will contact pre-registered students, starting on March 1st, to discuss your retreat project and supplies (to be purchased directly from the teacher). See DESCRIPTION, above, which contains both specific retreat information and project options.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades # 8 & larger, & hook. Optional: If not using one of Cammie’s patterns, bring your own pattern. Any wool you might like to use in this project.

BIO:

Cammie’s fascination with rug hooking began in 2001 when she saw a hand-hooked rug in an antique shop in Lincoln, Nebraska. She questioned the shop owner about the rug and the owner explained that it was hand-hooked by a local woman in Lincoln who also taught classes. Cammie contacted the woman and took her first lesson within that same week - and never looked back! Since then, Cammie has taken classes with many of the great Primitive teachers and loves passing on that knowledge to her own students.

Currently, Cammie has opened her own Studio in Goldsboro, NC, Baskets of Wool Studio. She holds Hook-Ins and 3–4-day workshops for groups up to 12. She designs and sells her own patterns and completed rugs on Etsy as Baskets of Wool. She received her McGown teacher certification in 2008 and had several of her rugs published in the 2018 book by Ellen Banker called Hooked on Words: Inspiration, Techniques, Projects.
