Description:
This is a guided residency - meaning that the students will be using Rug Hooking Week as their “educational studio.” It is a collaboration experience! RHW is filled with unlimited resources: an immense exhibit of creative fiber art to study, thousands of talented fiber artists to network with, and numerous vendors with fiber art supplies, equipment, materials and other goods. Susan will guide you through RHW, to find those aspects that are important to your fiber art today, as well as future work.
Consider this workshop, if you will be attending RHW for the first time or if it has become an anticipated routine. The goal of the Guided Artist Residency Workshop is to make the most of your time at RHW, learn new things, find the resources and supplies you need, and network with other fiber artists.
We will start by preparing ahead of visit with a one-on-one consult with Susan identifying exhibit elements you are most interested in – using a shopping list format. Upon arrival, as a group we will go through the collections looking for how different materials, techniques and designs were used. Through this process, you will find new tools and ideas to incorporate into your own work. It’s fun to learn from the other students in the workshop, as Susan addresses their questions, you may discover new interests.
Are you interested in entering work in local galleries and regional juried shows? Presentation of work and promotional material can be part of your personal time with the instructor. Consider this year your time to grow!
The workshop format includes an individual Zoom session with Susan prior to attending RHW, discussing experiences in the rug hooking community, expectations in attending RHW, and goals. Susan and each student will coordinate for a short intro to the layout of exhibit space upon arrival. During Friday evening, the full class will be able to explore the exhibit and as a class discuss observations, learn about fiber arts groups, media, and exhibit opportunities. The Saturday session includes attending Celebration Gallery Talk which focuses on the Elements and Principles of Design achieved in the finalists’ work - followed by a sit down, review and assignments for follow up. Final wrap-up with instructor to be arranged via a post RHW group Zoom session.
