Hooking

Description:

Come spend the day hooking with Carol from The Old Tattered Flag. Carol will show you how to use textures, plaids, mottled and art wool to create special highlights in your rug hooking. Students will be hooking on our 8 Point Star pattern with all of Carol’s gorgeous hand dyed wools. Carol has created a special palette of golds with eight different wools that will create a beautiful display of texture and beauty in your rug. Carol will also demonstrate the beading technique that was used around the edge of the rug.

While this class is about using texture in your rugs, Carol will be happy to answer all questions you have about the art of primitive rug hooking. Her obsession with everything wool and rug hooking will be apparent the moment you walk through the door and she is happy to share her knowledge.

This project will be hooked in a #8 cut. This pretty little rug can be used as a wall hanging, as a table rug or can be stuffed and made into a pillow.

Teacher will contact students prior to class:  Yes

Level: Basic – students must have basic rug hooking knowledge & experience.

Supply description: 16” square - 8 Point Star pattern drawn on linen and all the woolens needed to hook it.

Students Need to Bring: Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades #8, & hook. (Carol will have The Old Tattered Flag’s Cutting dies available for those who wish to use them to cut their wool).

Bio:

Carol DeCoteau has been hooking for 28 years. She was taught by Ann Eastwood in Sebring, Florida and instantly fell in love with the new fiber art she had found. Having originally come from Vermont, the warm and fluffy woolens of rug hooking, and the countless little loops appealed to her greatly.

In her 28 years of hooking, she has easily hooked over 800 rugs, both big and small. Carol is the Mom half of the mother/daughter team of The Old Tattered Flag and dyes the wool, color plans the rug patterns and hooks them for display in their shop and on their website.

Carol’s style leans toward traditional while Julie, who designs the patterns, prefers a more primitive style, but somehow, they merge on the color choices and subject matter for their designs. Carols use of color and placement of just the right mottle or texture in a certain spot help Julie’s designs stay primitive while helping to achieve a traditional feel as well.
