In this workshop you will design a primitive and whimsical pattern and project. Leave your worries behind along with any self-doubt on your abilities and replace them with laughter and creativity! Frank takes the fear and panic out of the design process and replaces it with his innovative and fun tips and techniques.
Frank is an artist in many mediums and he loves to help others to create and design. Over the years, he has shared his artistic talents and humorous stories with individuals, groups, and on TLC’s Trading Spaces. During this workshop, he will help you to achieve your own unique design and guide you through the placement of motifs. He will also discuss how he uses a myriad of materials in his own work and share tips on how he avoids arthritis and carpel tunnel in the process!
After the design process, students will have the option to either “Punch or Hook” the project with an Oxford Needle Punch or a traditional hook. If using a Needle Punch, you can use either # 6 cuts of wool that will fit in a # 10 Punch Needle or you can use yarn. If hooking, you may use yarn or any wool strips/noodles you have in cut # 6 to # 10 --- the size will impact the level of detail to making the design either primitive or “extremely" primitive.
Frank will contact each student to let them know what will be needed in plenty of time before the class. There will be no kits since you will make use of the materials you already have…Heaven knows we all have a STASH!
Teacher will contact students prior to class: Yes.
Level: Basic – students must have basic rug hooking or rug punch knowledge & experience. Frank says…you will also need advanced experience in laughing and being joyous!
Supply/Kit description: None
Students Need to Bring: Basic supplies: a frame, scissors, hook or Oxford Needle Punch, backing, Sharpie marker, Mylar, wool strips or yarn. Optional: if using uncut wool - a cutter & cutter blades. Frank will contact students with more details & options.
Frank Bielec’s work has been described as the love child of a Muppet and Jack the Ripper. His work is primitive with a touch of whimsy, sometimes with a trace of dark humor.
Frank started rug punching in the late sixties. He later added hooking after taking a class from Kindred Spirits in Liberty, Missouri. If you catch him at work, you will find him working with projects involving different mediums. At times he “binge works” with the same medium on several variations.
Frank does not keep a list of accomplishments. He believes what you have done is not as important as what you will do. He has taught workshops in several states and has been featured in several publications along with his wife, Judy. When asked to make a list of honors he replies – let’s just say this ain’t my first rodeo. Enough said.
SPECIALTIES: Combining the primitive with the joy of allowing the creative spirit to be part of the process.
