DESCRIPTION:

The embroidery and block prints from Gujarat, West Bengal, and Kashmir will inspire our rugs in this workshop. The pattern archive includes elephants, peacocks, love birds, lions, and horses as well as geometric and floral motifs from these three Indian States. Students will learn how to incorporate beading, proddy marigold garlands, learn to embed mirrors with hand dyed yarns (shisha technique), affix gems and beading, make wool applique borders, and create crochet picote edges. Gorgeous, embroidered silk and cotton Indian ribbons will be available to border your piece and can help establish your color plan prior to class should you choose to incorporate them. Assistance with color planning these saturated colorful rugs. Use of color wheel will be provided if students choose to bring their own wool.

Teacher will provide a brochure with all available patterns and pictures of finished instructor and award-winning student work to choose from. Maddy will set up a personalized meeting on video to assist with ribbon selections and the color planning. Pattern selection range from 4 to 8 cuts, depending on size of mat or rug detail,

There will be Power points on Indian block facilities in Rajasthan, Gujerat, and West Bengal, and book sources for students to access design archives for their own future work.

PROJECT MATERIALS/SUPPLY FEE:

Pattern choices run from $38 for small mats to $150 for larger rugs. Teacher can custom dye wools to match border ribbon; however, students may also supply their own wool.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: 

Colored pencils, scissors, hook, frame, color wheel if you are providing your own wool, crewel needle, camera, and your good cheer.

BIO:

Maddy is McGown and Oxford Certified and is a third-generation rug hooker. She began designing rugs for her company Fioriware 30 years ago, and enjoys cultural cloth from around the world, especially from India. She is a founding member of the central Ohio Buckeye Rug Hooking Guild and has served on the Board in many positions. She writes on occasion for Rug Hooking Magazine where she shares her interests in the design process. She enjoys teaching nationally and internationally.
