Description:

Let’s Explore Rug Hooking!  This class is designed for the beginning level rug hooker.  Rebecca will provide you with a kit called Art Deco Bouquet drawn on rug warp that includes wool cut into a #5 strip.  This falls midway in the width spectrum used by rug hookers and will give you the opportunity to decide later if you would like to go larger or smaller. The majority of your time will be spent in the pulling of loops but during short breaks throughout the day she will also answer all of your questions regarding the equipment needed, tips for pulling even loops and how to finish your piece.  She will also share some of the history of rug hooking.  You will leave the class with the knowledge needed to not only finish the project but to move ahead into creating your next piece of fiber art.

Students Need to Bring:

Scissors, paper and writing utensil of choice.

You are encouraged to bring their own hooking frame, hook, etc. if you have those items but you do NOT need to purchase any of those items for the class.   You may borrow frames to use during the class from a selection on loan from vendors and Sauder Village.

Bio:

Rebecca started her rug hooking career in the 1970s while living in England with her Air Force family.  Working via the mail service (no email or Zoom classes then!), she took ongoing “correspondence lessons” with LaNue Kelley,  a McGown certified teacher who lived near her home town in the States.  In the years since then she has studied with a variety of teachers including both fine and primitive experts.  These teachers include such well known names as Joyce Krueger, Donna Hrkman, Cindi Gay, Kris Miller, Nola Heidbreder, Judy Carter, Pris Buttler, Sybil Osicka, Diane Stoffel, Susan Clarke, and Kim Hirt among others.

Rebecca’s first project was in a #2 cut but she quickly moved into experimenting with other sizes.  She has done projects in cuts 3-8 but today prefers to work in the range of #4 to #6.

Rebecca has been involved with Sauder Rug Week since its very beginning.  She started as a demonstrator in the days when they dressed in period clothing and sat out in the Historic Village.  Later she joined the Sauder Rug Hooking Week Team as volunteer coordinator and today works with the registration and take in of rugs, exhibit set up and take down and is the contact person during the week in Founder’s Hall.

When not working on her projects, Rebecca volunteers at Sauder Village in the Collections Department working with the Curator of Collections.  She especially loves working with the historic objects and helping create the exhibits that tell the story of Northwest Ohio and the Great Black Swamp.
