Description:

Monarch butterflies seem to have stolen the hearts of many people. They are beautiful and they have an amazing migration story. In this class, Janine will teach how to incorporate various types of yarn into a hooked project that is done mostly with wool strips. In this 11x14 inch piece, the hooked monarch butterfly is perched on a milkweed flower that is done in an embroidery technique that makes it appear 3D. The piece is hooked in mostly cut #7 with some #5. Directional hooking will be discussed as well as higgedly piggedly. Janine will teach how to create her signature butterfly backgrounds. Also discussed will be incorporating leftover worms from previous projects, one of Janine's favorite things to do. The kit will include most of what is needed to complete the project, but Janine strongly encourages students to bring cut strips of green wool from past projects to incorporate into the leaves and background. A handout will be provided which will include a detailed description of the techniques covered in class, a great reference for future landscape projects.

Students Need to Bring:

Hook, frame, scissors, needle with large eye, cutter, various dark green "worms" leftover from other projects.

Bio:

As a self-taught artist, Janine tackled rug hooking with abandon when she discovered it in 2014. Since then, she has created over 40 original designs and sells her patterns on Etsy. She has had many articles published in Rug Hooking Magazine and has four times been a Celebration Finalist. For four years, Janine taught beginning rug hooking in Florida. She has also taught many guild and hook-in classes. One of Janine's rugs was chosen as First Place Peoples' Choice at the 2019 Searsport Harbor Hookin;. She created a video teaching how to bind hooked rugs which is published on YouTube with over 50,000 views. Janine was featured in an international online video by rug hookers from Australia. And she has been a featured speaker at a hook-in. Janine's rugs were featured in a solo exhibit at the library in Newton, IL. As a full-time RVer, and constantly on the move around the United States and Canada, Janine journals, writes a blog and takes photos of their travels. Her vast and varied experiences are reflected in her rug hooking in a unique way. Because of being self-taught, Janine believes in total freedom and adventure with rug hooking and enjoys helping other experiment. When she is not driving the rig or planning the next adventure, Janine hooks art, paints in her sketchbook and makes one-of-a-kind jewelry.
