Description:

Can’t travel to Guatemala for the Multicolores experience? Enjoy this special opportunity to learn directly from Maya artists. This two day workshop will introduce you to the art of Maya embroidery while working on a pattern designed exclusively for the class by a Maya artist. You will learn the basic embroidery stitches that can be used on their own or as part of your rug making. The Maya artists will be teaching you via zoom about their culture, process and design inspirations. There will be a translator (Judith Hotchkiss) and two facilitators (Kim Scanlan and Rebecca Martin) in class to help your creations come to life. This class pairs well with the Maya hooking class - sign up for both and meet even more Maya artists.

Bio:

We (Multicolores) are a Guatemala registered non-profit organization that supports Maya women in their process of self-discovery and artistic development. Multicolores’ programs are transformative- creating long-term, sustainable impacts that strengthen entire communities. We use art as a tool for exploration and expression, igniting the artists’ many talents and abilities, and empowering them to become powerful agents of change.

Multicolores works with groups of Maya K’iché, Kaqchiquel and Tzutujil women from the Guatemalan highlands. Our artists represent 9 communities from the regions of Sololá, Totonicapán, Quiché, Quetzaltenango and Sacatepéquez. Together we are a strong support network that encourages well-being and fulfillment among all members. We believe in mutual aid, promote environmental consciousness and thrive on building relationships with diverse local and international communities.
