DESCRIPTION:

Expand your knowledge of Folk Art and learn what makes a rug a true primitive. Lucille’s retreat will focus on American Classics – American History is her passion and she incorporates those ideas, folk art and all the things she loves - into her original designs.

This class is for those who love primitive rugs; focusing on the use of texture and wide cut wools, backgrounds, borders, and deep rich colors of Early American to create a rug that is an instant antique.

Sailing-Ship-stars-shells-border-hooked-rug-FestaLucille’s philosophy is a pattern should be fun to hook and also contain elements of challenge. She will talk about how “America the Beautiful” holds an endless source of inspiration; old houses, baskets, holidays, boats, flowers, animals, flags, etc., then show you how to use those inspirations, plus a little imagination, to create original rugs that reflect who you are, where you’ve been, and where you want to go.

Lucille has over 150 original designs along with antique adaptions and a Civil War series to select from for your retreat project – which come is a which variety of sizes. An #8 cut or above is recommended for this retreat, but smaller cuts can be used. Lucille will bring a large selection of wonderful hand-dyed and textured wools and patterns too.

Spend 4 days with Lucile creating your own piece of Americana, and developing a passion for the primitive and folk art style!  


LEVEL: 

Basic - Students must have a basic rug hooking knowledge and experience. 


RETREAT PROJECT & SUPPLIES:
The teacher will contact pre-registered students, starting on March 1st, to discuss your retreat project and supplies (to be purchased directly from the teacher). See DESCRIPTION, above, which contains both specific retreat information and project options. If teacher has not listed specific project info, they will typically offer a range of project designs/patterns and sizes.


STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: 

Basic hooking supplies: frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades #8 & larger (unless you are using smaller cuts), & hook.

BIO:

Lucille holds a degree in American History, Political Science, and American Studies. An avid American History buff specializing in the American Civil War era and Women’s History, which is expressed in her hooked rugs.

In 2002, she started her business, American Country Rugs, and began teaching weekly rug hooking classes at her home in Wilton, Connecticut. Shortly after that she began hosting hook-ins and vending at local shows. In 2004, Lucille and her husband, Dave, fulfilled a lifelong dream of living in Vermont, where she opened a studio and shop in East Rupert. American Country Rugs is also an online business, where patterns, supplies and equipment are available on their website.

Early American Life Magazine selected Lucille’s work in numerous years for its Directory of Traditional American Crafts. Lucille and her work have been featured in Country Home Magazine, The Cottage Journal Magazine, and at prestigious Folk Art Shows. The American Folk Art Museum in New York City have purchased and sold her hooked rugs. Lucille is a member of ATHA, she served as the Region 1 Representative for 4 years, and was also a former ATHA Vice-President, and 2013 Biennial Liaison.
