Degraff-1DESCRIPTION:

As a lifelong Vermonter, Davey has spent many days admiring and replicating the beautiful local scenery in her hooking. In this retreat, she will demonstrate how to use color, composition, and hooking techniques to achieve a painterly effect. Each student will begin with a realistic place or landscape that is familiar to them. Then by applying Davey’s techniques, the result will be an artistic interpretation of their image.

This retreat is for the more experienced rug hookers who want to explore a painterly approach to their work. Students will need to come to class with their image drawn on backing, Davey will email students to explain this in more detail. Students will also have the option to have Davey draw the pattern from a photo, which you will send her in advance.

Degraff-2Students will be able to select and purchase wools from Davey’s collection and from vendors, but you are also encouraged to bring your own palette of colors that suit your taste and your personal landscape. Because the goal is a more impressionistic painterly approach, spot dyed wools of one or more colors is helpful. Students will be working in cuts # 6 - 7. This retreat will also explore using some yarns to enhance areas of your piece.

Davey will bring several of her Country Landscape rugs as examples. There will be group lessons, but she wants to be able to spend as much time as possible with each student. The goal is to learn from each other’s work, have fun, and leave the class with a clear idea of how to finish your Country Landscape!

Degraff-3LEVEL:
Intermediate – Students must have a basic rug hooking knowledge and experience.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:
Basic hooking supplies: frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades # 6 - 7, & hook. Students are encouraged to bring your own palette of colors that suit your taste and your personal landscape.

Degraff-4BIO:

Davey DeGraff is a native Vermonter and has been a traditional rug hooker for 25 years. She started teaching 5 years ago mostly in her state including twice at the Green Mountain Rug School.

She is a member of the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild, was Show Chairman twice for the Hooked in the Mountain annual show, and was a featured artist in 2016. For several years, she produced the designs of Laurilyn Wiles and Vermont Folk Rugs. She has also drawn patterns for Polly Minick.

Degraff-5Davey has attended many workshops and classes over the years and her hooking style has been influenced by those experiences. Today, her inspiration comes from the local landscape and more specifically the places that are familiar to her and evoke personal memories. That and her interest in impressionistic art and watercolor painting leads one to describe her approach to rug hooking as painterly.

She lives on a small lake near Burlington with her husband and their dog. There is an active group of rug hookers in the area that have gathered every week for years.  Davey enjoys a creative life and today can call herself a fiber artist.
