Karen-Poetzinger-hooked-rug-mug-with-spoon2DESCRIPTION:

Students will start with the basics of learning how to setup a simple still life. From there we will use a camera to capture our subject and use some simple photo editing tricks to create a transferable design and a hooking road map.

We will discuss value and how a captivating piece can be achieved by use of value and color.  Directional hooking and how to achieve contour and depth will also be a discussion topic. Also, students will learn how to hook a “watercolor” background to enhance their “paintings”.

These still life miniatures are 6” x 6”, so students may be able to work on more than one project during the retreat.

Later in the retreat, Karen will teach her method of framing. The goal is that all students will leave the retreat with a beautiful piece ready to hang on the wall.

Karen-Poetzinger-hooked-rug-apple-still-lifeLEVEL:  Intermediate – students must have basic rug hooking knowledge and experience, as well as basic knowledge and experience in using cuts #3-4 and fine shading.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:  Basic hooking supplies: a frame, scissors, cutter, cutter blades #3-4, & hook.

Karen enjoys creating pieces using a painterly, impressionistic approach. Her most recent works have included still lifes, animal portraits, and landscapes.

Several years ago Karen had the opportunity to take a workshop with Carol Marine, the creator of the Daily Painters, an online venue for the sale of small “daily” paintings. This experience prompted her to create small still life “paintings” in wool. She loves to hook painterly pieces. By blending colors together and employing very lights and darks she creates captivating drama in her pieces. The small pieces have become quite popular with her students. Due to their small scale a piece can be completed in a relatively short period of time.
