DESCRIPTION:

Sarah-Bechler-hooked-bag-with-flowerPrimitive yet so very interesting and beautiful will be the comments you will receive as you show friends your completed Carpet Bag Purse. In this retreat students will learn how color use can totally change the look and mood of your purse. You will choose from several original designs that Sarah has created specifically for this retreat - floral, geometric and pictorial. Colors will be optional for each student. We will primarily use cuts #8 but will also be trimming down strips for detail areas

Sarah likes to use a variety of materials in her projects. Dyed wool, off the bolt wool with texture, solid wool, cottons and even some silk and velvet. You will learn how movement in your piece creates interest and takes your work to a whole new level.

Prior to class you will choose your design and color palette. You are welcome to use materials from your own stash but they must meet the requirements of the project. This project will also require some hand sewing. No fancy stitches but should be comfortable with needle and thread. Come prepared to accomplish a lot of hooking.

BIO:

Sarah-Bechler-hooked-rug-bag-Be-BraveSarah Bechler first discovered hooked rugs in 1987 at a folk art show where she was one of the featured artisans and the artist in the neighboring booth was a rug hooker. Sarah Immediately fell in love with hand-dyed wool and primitive designs. To her surprise, this woman lived in a neighboring town and taught rug hooking lessons in her home. That was the beginning of more than 3 decades of learning, teaching and designing. During this time Sarah was chosen as one of the top 200 Craftsmen in America by Early American Life magazine.

Sarah appreciates all styles of rug hooking but finds the primitive style and muted colors are what make her heart sing. She primarily hooks in wool strips but also enjoys using cottons and silk fabrics to bring other textures to her work.

Sarah currently is actively creating, selling and teaching a very special group of international women that have been transplanted in her area for 3-5 years due to their husband’s job assignments in Michigan. They love this new found art form!!  She also spends time working on and producing her furniture line that includes chairs and couches.  A new venture this year for Sarah has been branching out into the world of creative retreats both internationally and stateside with an emphasis on rug hooking and wool applique.
