Workshops & Dinner Lecture

All class participants will receive two one-day complimentary admission passes to Historic Sauder Village. You can use this personalized, non-transferable pass on any day of the Woodcarver’s Show. Your passes will be given to you at class check-in and must be presented at the admission desk in order to gain entrance into the Historic Village.

Skill Level:  Novice to Advanced Students

Description: 

In this three-day workshop, Rick will teach his innovative style of carving miniature whimsical cottonwood bark houses.  Students will use a combination of hand and power tools to create one-of-a-kind, free standing or hanging cottonwood bark ornaments.  Most students should finish three pieces or more during the seminar.  Rick has the ability to work with novice to advanced students in the same class, structuring the class to meet each individual’s needs. 

When carving your cottonwood bark ornaments, you will learn to create movement in the carving using Rick’s specialized techniques.  The class will include instruction on repairing and replacing broken out pieces.  You will also learn Rick’s unique way of finishing the carving using various waxes.

“Fundamentals of Relief Carving”
with Bob Stadtlander

Dates:  Wednesday, October 25, Thursday, October 26, & Friday, October 27

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (with one hour lunch break)

Class Fee:  $275 ($255 Members)

Class Size:  Minimum 7 / Maximum 10

Location: Sauder Heritage Inn

Skill Level: Beginner to moderately advanced.

Description:

The class will consist of covering the fundamentals of relief carving.   Each student will choose a project (from a list provided) to complete during the class.  The class will cover the following: layout, design, theory of relief and perspective, tool sharpening, using knives and gouges, detailing, and finishing techniques. The last few hours of the class will be spent painting the project.

Prior to the class, Bob will contact you to provide a list of relief carving projects the students can choose from.  Students should be able to complete one beginner project or one large egg during the class. If small eggs are chosen, it may be possible to complete more than one.  Students will be expected to furnish his/her own tools and equipment. Boards and Eggs, patterns, sharpening system, and paints/solvents used during the class will be provided.  Some supplies will be available for purchase.

Supply List:

Each student will be expected to furnish his/her own tools and equipment.   A specific supply list will be sent when you select your project.

“Woodburning for Project Enhancing”
with Ann Wenger

Dates:  Thursday, October 26, & Friday, October 27

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (with one hour lunch break)

Class Fee:  $175 ($160 Members)

Class Size:  Minimum 5 / Maximum 12

Location:  Sauder Heritage Inn

Skill Level:  Beginners to Accomplished. This workshop will be tailored to your needs and skill level. 

Description:
This workshop will teach you how to enhance by woodburning any projects such as leather, plates, boxes, jewelry, gourds, carvings, portraits, or wall décor. You will also have the opportunity to colorize your project.

Supplies Needed:  Bring your own burner & tips. If you want to colorize your project you can bring Prismacolor pencils. Instructor will also share hers.

Annual Woodcarver’s Awards Banquet & Dinner Lecture with Rick Jensen

Date: Saturday, October 28, 6:00 p.m.

Location: Sauder Heritage Inn

Guest Speaker: Rick Jensen

Tickets: $30.00 per person (pre-registration required)

In addition to your workshops, plan to join us for the annual Woodcarver’s Awards Banquet on Saturday evening. After a delicious buffet dinner, awards are presented for winning exhibitors at the show and our Guest Artist, Rick Jensen, will serve as our guest speaker.

Cancellations:  Cancellations prior to September 22, 2017 will receive a refund of fees minus a 10% processing fee.  No refunds after September 22, 2017.  If classes do not meet the minimum number of students by September 22, 2017, we may be forced to cancel the class, and all fees will be refunded.
