Our Mission

We foster a unique environment that explores the past, engages the senses, and inspires wonder.

History of Sauder Village

Born in 1904, Erie Sauder’s life-long fascination with woodworking began early while growing up on his family’s farm south of Archbold, Ohio. He founded Sauder Woodworking Company in 1934 and invented the first “knock-down” table in 1953, revolutionizing the furniture industry. Today, Sauder Woodworking’s home office and factory are still located right here in Archbold.

As he neared retirement, Erie turned his focus to preserving the history of everyday rural life. In 1976, he opened the nonprofit Historic Village as a place where guests can experience the craftsmanship, values, and ingenuity of northwest Ohio’s early settlers.

The subsequent additions of the Barn Restaurant, Heritage Inn, Doughbox Bakery, Sauder Village Campground, and Founder’s Hall have made Sauder Village into the expansive, all–in-one destination it is today. Erie’s favorite saying was “We are just so glad you came.” Those words continue to inspire and guide Sauder Village as we welcome you for memorable experiences and connection beyond the everyday.

Sauder Village is a 501c3 nonprofit education and history organization.

“You can put all the history you want in books, but it will never speak like the tangible history will.”
