Description
Rug Hooking for Beginners is an introductory course into the traditional North American craft of rug hooking. This class will teach the original technique used in rug hooking and allow you to create beautiful textile art pieces that will brighten your floors and walls.
Each student will complete one 8” x 8” sampler hooked mat with the shapes and colors of their choosing. Students will learn about basic design elements (emphasis on color, contrast, and texture) and learn traditional geometric fiber art designs (hit and miss, cat’s paw, log cabin, etc.). Students will also learn the correct hooking and finishing techniques to complete their rug (whipping and binding tape).

Skill level: Beginner
Supply fee: $65 payable to the instructor at the beginning of class. Fee includes: a rug hooking kit consisting of pattern on linen, one hook, binding for finishing, hand dyed and hand cut wool strips, one 12” quilting hoop, and handouts. Instructor will also have rulers, wool cutter, stencils and markers for student use during class.
Student supplies: Scissors, needle, thread, and black Sharpie marker.

Hayley Perry:
Hayley Perry is a contemporary fiber artist from Southeastern New England who employs the technique of rug hooking to explore colorful, mixed media artworks. Rug hooking tracks back many generations in her Canadian family and thus is an important part of her process and identity as an artist. Hayley founded LoopbyLoopStudio.com in 2013, which is an online business that specializes in traditional rug hooking designs and materials. Hayley's work has been included in many national exhibitions and fiber art publications, such as Hooking Skies, Magpie Times, Fiber Art Now and Rug Hooking Magazine.
